Blast from the past? Not really. Although the name may seem familiar, Mitsubishi guarantees the unveiling of a completely new vehicle with their 2018 Eclipse Cross. In fact, this is Mitsubishi’s first all-new model in years. The Japanese automotive manufacturer decided to resurrect the name “Eclipse” for the new compact SUV from their long-running, performance-based, and beloved sports coupe discontinued in 2012 - despite the lack of resemblance between the two.
The Eclipse Cross’s styling is sharp, dynamic, and muscular and arguably one of the boldest and best-looking SUV designs seen on the market in years. The front bumper combines elements from the Lexus LS and Toyota Aygo, but doesn’t feel like a rip-off. Being a crossover, it also has a swooping roof that is usually found on a coupe, which leads to the angular rear-end.
Inside the car, Mitsubishi has opted for a ‘less is more’ approach, as the interior looks uncluttered and refined. It is fairly well connected, supporting both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Powering the Eclipse Cross is a new 1.5-liter direct-injection turbocharged gasoline engine with an eight-speed CVT transmission (only engine available in the United States), which has a compatible sports mode built in. A 2.2-liter direct-injection diesel engine with a eight-speed transmission is also available.
