The Mitsubishi Company was originally established as a shipping firm by Yataro Iwasaki in 1870. Over the next several years, they expanded their business into various fields including paper, steel, glass, electrical equipment, aircrafts and more. Mitsubishi’s automotive origins date back to 1917 when Mitsubishi Model A was first put in production. The Mitsubishi Model A was discontinued after only 22 models were built due to the war. Immediately following the end of WWII, the company returned to manufacturing vehicles. After the war, allied occupation forces demanded that Japan’s big industrial groups be disbanded and Mitsubishi Headquarters was split into smaller enterprises.
When the Mitsubishi organization was disbanded in 1946, most of the small Mitsubishi companies abandoned the name. In 1952, the San Francisco Peace Treaty was set in place and Japan was welcome back into the international community. Two years later, Mitsubishi companies that had abandoned the name merged to reestablish the growing company.
In the 1960s, Japan’s economy was gearing up and the car industry was taking off. Mitsubishi was a big part of the growing automotive industry and was producing over 75,000 vehicles annually in the late 60’s. On April 22nd, 1970, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation was formed as a single operation focused on the automotive industry.
Mitsubishi Motors had a strategy to increase exports by forging alliances with well-established companies like Chrysler. It is because of this relationship that they were able to begin selling the Galant in the United States under the name of Dodge Colt. In 1982, the Mitsubishi brand was introduced to the American market for the first time with the Tredia sedan, Cordia and Starion coupes. As of 2007, Mitsubishi has over 200 bases of operations in approximately 80 countries worldwide and has reached 1.3 million cars of total production.
